Studio Visits..

So I've been emailing a few studio's that I'm interested in - I've had a studio visit arranged at Manifest ( I was meant to go this Friday for a full day but I'm ill and do not wish to spread my germs to a group of people I've never met) so It's been arranged for the 8th June with studio manager Martin. Cant wait.

I heard back from Mark at Amplitude Creative - he said he's quite busy so wont have a chance to meet with me..

And then I was lucky enough to hear back from Wendy at New English who said she was willing to give me half an hour anytime after the 18th June! Really excited about this and it's quite good as It's based in Leicester.

Study Task 6 - Spreading the word

Online Presence at the moment..

Twitter
I tend to tweet quite a lot - I find that it's easier to follow design studios and creatives on twitter as you can see what they're up to quite regularly. It's also much easier to get in touch with other students too.

Website
My current website is running through cargo - I find that it's easy to manage as it allows you to update projects quite easily and it also looks reasonably good too.

Behance
I've had behance running since first year I find that I don't always update it regularly but I've been trying to get projects on there asap.

Tumblr
Daily ramblings, life and some nice work.

Final Printed Business Card

Manage to print a quick mock up of my business card on my own printer, had a idea of what I wanted. Thinking it would really be best to print them from moo.com not looking for anything too flashy at the moment.

I printed onto glossy photo paper which did look quite nice, but would be a lot of effort to make up a load of business cards. Might just spend a tenner at moo.com

PPD2 Progress Report

Baljeet Kaur Samra - BKS Graphic Design

I managed to finalise the pdf mail out that I had been designing to email to some design studios. I'm happy with it and decided to only attach 6 of my projects that I felt were the most relevant.

I haven't been the proactive with the whole PPD module as I've been quite worried about getting in touch with designers and studios. A few months ago I did manage to secure a visit to Manifest, for 2 days in June after talking to the studio manager Martin on Twitter.. Apart from this I have just been looking for studios that I'm interested and just looking through the projects that interest me the most.

Studios that I might email.. soon. Hopefully today. maybe.
Manifest.

Studio output
Fuse Design
Grid Creative
NB studio.

Obviously haven't really encountered any problems yet as I've not done much, I'll start to worry when no one gets back to me. The next step is to really think about what I'm going to say when I contact people once I've sent a few emails out I think i'll be more confident about getting in touch with other designers. I think I need to update my website too, having a few problems with the layout so need to get that finalised soon. Also need make sure my behance profile is all up to date and ensure everything is liked and accessible.

Had a quick chat with John and he told me not to be shy, to really think about the studios I'm interested in and he also said that he liked the progress I'd made on the mail out.

PDF Mail out. Maybe.

Open publication - Free publishing - More 1

Started to focus more on the PDF mail out I could send to studio's that I might want to get in touch with. Not fully decided about which projects I want to keep in, might see if there are any briefs that I might have missed, but I'm quite apprehensive about some of the projects I worked in first year, not sure they're entirely relevant to my current practice.

Mail out

17/04/12 IM STILL WORKING ON IT. ALRIGHT.

19/04/12 No I haven't changed anything yet.

I've been really stuck with coming up with something innovative for the mail out. I think it might be worth going through everything i've done and being a bit more selective, then I can focus more on the layout. Seems quite weird that we've only really done three briefs this year - As I can't really include anything from the type module? Hmm.

28/04/12 STILL NOT DONE ANYTHING. OH JEEZ. SORT YOURSELF OUT.

OUPD201 - Study Task 4

Creative CV
Started working on my CV. Found it a lot harder than I thought I would. It's quite difficult trying to make it 'creative' without losing sight of the content. Think there is still a lot of content I could add to the cv, need to go back and see which information is actually relevant.

Quite happy with the layout and the rest of it, I think it is quite simple but then does reflect the kind of work I produce, as well as having all of my information on it as well.

Will upload my CV into a issuu document, but will also get it printed so I can photograph it as well. Think the logo works quite well, although I'm ensure as to whether I want it to be red or black? Can consider changing that at a later date.

I think the CV works well both on screen and printed as well, although I think it might be worth considering the format and having something a bit different for the printed CV, so it works better with the mail out? I shall see..

Study Task 3

Based on the exercises, feedback and discussion in the studio workshop:

Part 1 - Identify document and evaluate a minimum of 10 examples of professional designer's and/or design studios who have used a range of media and formats to distribute samples of their work. You should aim to select a range of examples using a rage of media.

Part 2 - Produce a short (50 word) SWOT analysis of each example in order to analysis its relative merits and effectiveness as a promotional tool or strategy.

{ 1 } Anthony Burrill
anthonyburrill.com

During the Leeds print festival talks, I managed to get this newspaper print which included the latest work from Anthony Burrill. The idea of creating a newspaper portfolio is an effective way of showcasing your work - in Burrills case it allows the audience to see a collection of the latest work. Strengths of using this concept are that the print cost is quite low and a the portfolio can be produced in bulk.

{ 2 } Catherine Nippe
cnippe.com

Like Anthony Burrill, Catherine Nippe has also created a portfolio style newspaper, this one however includes much more information, including her background and other information as well. Again it seems like an effective way of showcasing a range of projects, however, due to the stock it can also be easily damaged, or ruined also it might easily be mistaken for a newspaper and thrown away.

{ 3 } AMV BBDO Creative Agency
www.amvbbdo.com/work/showreel/

Being a leading creative agency, AMV BBDO specialise in advertising and commercial projects with clients such as Heinz, Birdseye, Twinings and Walkers, considering many of their projects are screen based, television adverts and websites/web promotions they have created a short showreel to promote their latest projects. Having viewed a range of showreels in the past this one has to be one of the most effective ones I have seen, the pace is just right with music that doesn't distract the viewer from the content. The showreel is better than viewing full version of each project as it shows the key elements in each one, allowing the audience to get a quick idea of everything that is offered. It can also be easily shared across the web - making it easier to access compared to print based materials.

{ 4 } Yu Ping Chuang
behance.net/gallery/self-promotion/3582253

This printed publication by Yu Ping Chuang is a simple way of showcasing your latest work. Probably one of the most common ideas, easy to design and produce with a clear purpose. Although it is easy to design and also to produce it might not be the best concept when it comes to distribution, especially if it was to be posted, as it might not be cheap in terms of postage costs. In terms of strengths, it is a clear and concise way of presenting information but maybe not the most engaging.

{ 5 } Hype Type Studio
hypetype.co.uk

One of the websites that I regularly check is from Hype Type Studio, the website is updated regularly, as well as being easy to navigate around. Having a website is one of the easiest way to promote and share work, as it accessible to so many people. A good website is essential as it creates an impression about either yourself, or your company. As I mentioned the website is easy to navigate around which is essential. One of the things that maybe lets down the site is the fact that to find out more about the project you have to click a separate link, it could be useful to have the information on the same page as the images for the project. Besides this the website gives a real insight into the work of Paul Hutchison with different projects across a range of disciplines. One of the major benefits of having a website is that as you update it you have the choice to keep older projects or remove them, so it can be used to create a catalogue of all the work you have created.
